So, we are officially experiencing a pandemic... Perhaps you have been told to work from home for a time, maybe you’re getting prepared for the inevitable.

Working from home is a huge lifestyle change for most, and you soon may find you’re facing some hurdles.

The most important thing to do is create structure for yourself. Establish where you will be working, whether it is at your desk or the kitchen table.

Write down your schedule, make note of meetings or calls you have that day, and your start and sign off times.

Make sure you have all of the equipment you need to effectively work, so you’re ready to go when you start your day.

Finally, be prepared when the inevitable happens. Whether it’s distraction and boredom or just the munchies, you may have trouble staying focused. Always keep in mind your priorities for the day, and don’t forget... A walk around the block never hurt anyone!

You’re on fire. You had them nodding along as you answered all of their answers perfectly.

But then...CRICKETS...

Did you make one of these three big mistakes that gave them a reason to choose another candidate?

1. You forgot to bring copies of your resume. Forgetting your resume could give your interviewer a negative first impression and set a bad tone for the rest of the interview.
2. You didn’t do your research, or forgot the research you did. Be sure you know at least one reason why you want to work for this company, specifically.
3. You were too eager to please. Be yourself. Trying to give the right answers could make you look desperate and could give the impression that you’re not confident or unique.

Happy Marathon Monday!

If you are a New York City based race-runner, this weekend is a holy weekend 😂

10s of thousands of runners took to the streets to run, 26.2 miles in the NYC Marathon

3 years ago, I took to the treats on a beautiful November day to run 26.2 miles and it was still one of the best days of my life!

I’m sharing this with you because there is a certain stubborn confidence that comes with signing up to train for and run a marathon.

Arguably, this is an unreasonable task to ask of our bodies. But people do it, time and time again.

This same type of confidence is needed to apply for jobs, negotiate salaries, network with people you don’t know (yet!) At the very least this confidence in your ability to do what may feel impossible in the moment, is necessary to take the first step! 🏃🏻‍♀️ So, today I challenge you to take the first step, to project the stubborn confidence of a first time marathoner to the world!

She found herself in what she thought was a unique situation

She had given notice at her job, lined up a new opportunity but was worrying she made the wrong choice... We talked about her options and her mindset about her decision and worked towards finding a way for her to make a decision she could feel confident in

She weighed her options, ask to stay, stick with the choice to leave and today was the last day of her 2 week notice

I frequently take on additional challenges, like training for marathons or trying to lift heavier things at #f45 - stress

But I recently realized, it’s not that I like stress, I just like to be challenged

I like to check boxes and I like to feel like I am accomplishing new things!

And sometimes, that is stressful! So, I’m trying something new

When I feel stressed or overwhelmed I’m going to remind myself that this is part of the journey and try to identify if there is a less stressful way to reach my goal

The hardest part of letting go of the #premedlife was that I actually was letting go of my identity

I wasn’t Jamie, a 20-something studying biology. I was Jamie, the Pre-med

So I had to find out who the f I was AND what I was going to do with my life

For the first time in my life I realized I needed to fill my life with lots of things that made me happy, professional goals AND personal goals, I needed a life I could ENJOY!

Do you know that feeling, that moment, that time in your life where you have confronted the unsolvable problem?
•
Maybe you say you are between a rock in a hard place
•
Maybe it’s a lose lose situation
•
Maybe you just feel doomed, panicked, TRAPPED
•
I know you know that feeling and I also know that you (like me) can laugh at our past problems which trapped us, where there was no way out but to LOSE
•
And we can laugh because we made it we are on the other side, you made a choice, and now the problem seems small (or smaller) than it did at the time
•
I find it really helpful in these moments to act as though the problem belongs to someone else, and give that person advice
•
We often get clouded by fear when trying to make a decision for ourselves. Coming from an outside perspective can help reduce that fear
•

Why are you looking for a new job/why are you leaving your job?
•
This is an EASY one!
•
But it seems to trip so many people up
•
While it may feel like you are leaving your job before your current one sucks...
•
Your current job sucks for a reason and that reason is likely tied to the fact that you are being held back
•
Whether it’s by a crappy/rude/mean boss or because you have maxed out in what you want to accomplish at your current company
•
It’s all about GROWTH!
•
So, next time you’re asked why you’re looking for a new opportunity...
•
Be sure to mention you’re looking for a new job that gives you the opportunity to use your past experience to contribute in a meaningful way to their department but also one that allows you to grow as a professional
•
Throw in your desire to be at a new company for the long term and you can be SURE you aced that question!
•

I want to talk about getting fired, becoming unemployed, being let go, between jobs
•
Maybe you want to call it parting ways or coming to an agreement that things were not working out
•
Either way, it’s the same outcome, you are without work, and WORST OF ALL, you have to tell people that this has happened
•
What will they think?
•
Will they think I’m incompetent? Am I unhirable?
•
When really, all they will be thinking is, “wow that sucks, hope you find something soon”
•
EVEN the recruiter will be easily able to pass that over...if YOU’RE ABLE TO
•
I can go on an on about how getting fired actually makes you a BETTER employee in the future - dm me @thejamieterran -

But here is what you NEED to know and do, should you find yourself between employment
•
You were not fired because you’re a bad person or because you’re unintelligent
•
You were fired because you were in the wrong job for you right now
•
You may have even messed up, made a mistake or otherwise “deserved” to be let go, but unfortunately this is the hazard to being human
•
Nearly everyone will be let go, downsized, fired or otherwise find themselves unemployed.
•
Remind yourself that when you go on your next interview, stay positive and optimistic about the future
•
Because your past is NOT your future, unless you let it be
•
